I think the majority of Irish people would be upset if you suggested they are British in any way shape or form. "Britain" is just one island.

As far as I understand some Irish identify as "British", even some in the Republic of Ireland. Loyalists, protestants, or whatever. But that is more like various people in the British empire (like in Australia, New Zealand, etc) identified as British, probably until about the 1960s.

The official name of the UK is "United Kingdom of Great Britain and Northern Ireland".
